Rising storage costs force a new strategy
Allen Cooley, who runs a commercial and portrait studio in Atlanta, says he has been shooting professionally since 2006. For most of that time, buying a few gigabytes of media was a routine expense. By the end of 2025, however, a 4‑terabyte unit that cost $400 in 2022 was listed at roughly $1,200.
Reviewing his receipts, Cooley found that his 2025 purchases topped $20,000. The surge led him to stop buying new media altogether this year. He already owns hundreds of older units accumulated over two decades, a habit that now feels like a hidden reserve.
Commercial shoots often require three to six portable devices per job, and clients sometimes request the files again years later. A recent campaign that combined video and stills would have needed $4,000‑$5,000 in new storage, an amount Cooley was reluctant to spend.

He admits his business is down about 30 % from its 2023 peak, and the current year is roughly flat compared with the previous one. The decline reflects both market shifts and a personal choice to spend more time with his two young daughters.
“I believe demand from the data centers powering AI is one reason storage has gotten so expensive,” Cooley explained, noting the irony of using AI to cut his own hardware costs.
AI tool streamlines archive management
To avoid further purchases, Cooley turned to Claude, an AI assistant, to develop a cataloging program. The software scans every media unit, indexes files, and lets the user query which drives hold a particular asset.
“It’s saved me days, if not weeks, worth of work,” he said, highlighting how the tool replaces manual sorting of hundreds of devices. By identifying duplicate copies, he can safely delete them and free up space without risking client deliverables.

The system essentially lets him have a conversation with his archive, asking for a file and receiving a list of locations. This conversational interface cuts down the time spent on inventory management dramatically.
Cooley acknowledges that video work still demands massive storage, and if his workload leans heavily toward moving images, he may eventually need to purchase more media. For now, his existing stock stretches his budget.
From a broader view, the situation illustrates how rising hardware prices—driven in part by AI‑related data demands—are reshaping small‑business operations. Professionals who once treated storage as a sunk cost now treat it as a strategic asset, leveraging software to extend the life of existing equipment. Looking ahead, Cooley says he will keep using his accumulated devices as long as the volume of work allows. If demand picks up, he expects to return to buying new units, but for the foreseeable future, his AI‑assisted workflow lets him sidestep the steep price hikes that have plagued the market since late 2025.
