Each discipline usually has several sub-disciplines or branches, and distinguishing lines are often both arbitrary and ambiguous. Many agree that education is a purposeful activity directed at achieving certain aims, especially the transmission of knowledge. According to some conceptions, it is primarily a process that occurs during events like schooling, teaching, and learning.

Educational psychology both draws from and contributes to cognitive science and the learning sciences.
